Process
Often, a theme or concept can't be fully realized in storyboards. This is an example of the many variations this piece went through until a definitive style was settled upon.
Characters
Quirky
The story had a quirky, playful theme, and this needed to be represented in the design style of the main characters. Their metamorphoses from one shape to the next allowed us to play with scale, shape, and overall "cuteness."
Each character needed to feel both the same and unique. A few things were done to achieve this: variation in the sugar coating, colors, and blending of shades allowed us to create subtle, natural differences, providing a feeling of range and diversity.
Animation
Variation
Similar to creating the characters, where variation was needed, we applied the same approach throughout. Subtle adjustments to pose, position, angle, and timing create a broader sense of individualism for each character.
Compositing
The Final Touches
In this section, a variety of systems needed to come together. Unique character animation, procedural character animation, physics simulations for both the characters and fluids, along with changes in lighting that added atmosphere—the list goes on. Our team did a fantastic job of seamlessly stitching everything together.
